Florida State has dismissed head coach Mike Norvell’s defensive backs coach, Patrick Surtain Sr., who was there in Tallahassee for three years. The Seminoles finished 13th in the ACC standings with a 2-6 conference and 5-7 overall record.
The repercussions were bound to come as Norvell has been unable to recreate the 2023 season, where he finished with a 13-1 record. However, he registered a slightly bounce-back season as he finished with a 2-10 record in 2024.

Fans were surprised by this move as Surtain Sr. was least expected to be fired if any for the disastrous season.
“This is the dumbest thing they could have done,” one fan wrote.
“The scape goat let go’s have begun… rather than accept that the HC was the one responsible for their failures. Scar doing the same thing because Baby Beamer can’t do jack,” one fan commented.
“Wonder if there’s some kind of great plan behind this?” one fan asked.
“Oh hey, I would take him with the Buckeyes as an analyst,” another added.
“Look at his son. Bring him to Tennessee,” one fan reacted.
“fired maybe our best position coach while Tokarz and PAP still have jobs 🔥🗑️” another added.

Is FlorPatrick Surtain Sr. Related To Broncos Star Pat Surtain?
Yes. Florida State’s now-former defensive backs coach, Patrick Surtain Sr., is the father of Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
Surtain Sr. himself was a former NFL cornerback for 11 seasons. He played for the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs and earned multiple Pro Bowl selections. He became a coach after retiring as a player.
His son followed in his footsteps. Surtain Sr. coached his son at American Heritage School in Florida. Pat Surtain II went to the Alabama Crimson Tide before being picked 9th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Broncos.
“I learned a lot from him,” the younger Surtain said about his father after being drafted. “Gaining his insight and perspective on things has helped me a lot on the field. His game translates a lot into my game. Learning from him and having him teach me his techniques helped shape me up for the next level.”
Surtain Sr. will now look to get a job in another program as he carries a quality resume and should have a lot of suitors for his services.
