Antonio Gates is renowned as one of the greatest players in NFL history and a Chargers legend. He has been selected for his great career as one of the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame title.
The announcement for Gates being honored with the Pro Football Hall of Fame title was made Thursday night during the NFL Honors event.

Antonio Gates: Monumental Tight End with a Historic NFL Career:
Antonio Gates completed his tenure in the NFL in January 2020 after playing for 16 seasons with the Chargers. In his long career, he also set records for tight ends with 116 career touchdown catches and 21 games with multiple touchdowns.
Gates was also well known for being an unwavering target on third downs, scoring 39 touchdowns in the toughest situations, tied for the third-most in league history.
Moreover, he played for eight seasons with at least eight touchdown catches, a record-breaking feat for a tight end, and gained the fifth rank among all players.
“Antonio is an amazing human being who also happens to be one of the greatest players in NFL history. I’m thrilled to see him get the recognition he so deeply deserves,” said the controlling Owner and Chairman of the Board, Dean Spanos.
“To accomplish what Antonio has, never having played college football and going undrafted, is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and maximizing your God-given ability.
Antonio earned the trust and respect of coaches, teammates, and peers with humble confidence and an unassuming personality that made him a leader and mentor inside our locker room and one of the most beloved Chargers to ever wear the lightning bolt.
He redefined the tight end position in a way no one has since Kellen Winslow, and I can’t wait to see him put on that gold jacket for the first time this summer in Canton.”
