“The Expectations Were Completely out of Whack”: Josh Pate Claims Why Arch Manning Hype Was Doomed From the Start

Arch Manning struggled in his season debut as the Texas Longhorns’ new QB1, with the Texas offense getting stifled by the defending champions, Ohio State. Many have been talking about the Longhorns’ offensive collapse, with many pinning the blame on Arch Manning, especially as he came in with all the hype ahead of his first game as starting quarterback.

During his “Josh Pate’s College Football Show” podcast, analyst Josh Pate discussed Texas’ big Week 1 loss to Ohio State and how things might play out for Steve Sarkisian and his players for the season.

There, Pate noted that because the Manning family scion came in with a ton of hype, this marked him for a massive fall should he fail to perform against the Buckeyes. He said:

“But as far as Arch Manning being overrated, the expectations were completely out of whack. I’ve said this for months. Making him whatever you want to make him in the Heisman market… the Heisman market is just a reflection of the public.” (2:06)

“So FanDuel just puts whatever the public essentially is demanding that they put up on the odds board. It’s a reflection of what the public thinks,” he explained. (2:06)

However, Josh Pate did note that this was just the opening game, and Arch Manning still has plenty of chances to prove himself. He added that he is still the QB1 at Texas and his last name is still Manning, which means he has plenty of time to prove his doubters wrong.

Texas lost to Ohio State 7-14. Both teams’ defenses shined in that game, as neither team allowed anybody to score in the first quarter. However, Ohio State found some holes in Texas’ defenses and scored a touchdown in the second, and then another in the fourth. Texas tried to catch up with a touchdown of their own, but it was too late.

Tom Brady Weighs In on Arch Manning Criticism

If there is somebody who understands Arch Manning’s current situation, it is Tom Brady, who knows how it is to carry a team as the star quarterback. He appeared on the “Pro Football Focus” show and opined that in the digital era, evaluations of performances come so fast that players can get great-looking careers or see them torn down in the blink of an eye.

“So even though he didn’t have his best game today, and they lost, if he uses this to his advantage, Arch, he’s going to be tougher for it. And he’s going to have a better next game because of it,” said Brady. (39:27)

Tom Brady also pointed out that Arch Manning is still young and developing but already has a lot on his plate and still thinks he has a bright future ahead of him.
