Ex-NFL QB Explores Cost of Drafting the Next Deion Sanders for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are at the center of speculation as Hall of Famer Deion Sanders’ name surfaces in discussions about the team’s future. With Jerry Jones rumored to consider Sanders for the head coaching role, another debate looms—whether Dallas should target a premier cornerback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Holding the No. 12 pick, the Cowboys would need to trade up significantly to land an elite CB. However, given their 7-10 record and roster needs, sacrificing major assets to move up at least 10 spots appears unrealistic. The cost of finding the next “Prime Time” remains a hot topic.

Ex-NFL QB Weighs in on Cowboys’ Draft Strategy for Next Deion Sanders

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel recently discussed the possibility of the Dallas Cowboys targeting a game-changing defender in the 2025 NFL Draft—someone who could mirror Deion Sanders’ impact. The conversation centers on Colorado’s two-way star Travis Hunter, whose versatility and talent have drawn comparisons to the Hall of Famer.

“heard Jerry likes Travis Hunter. No way. That’s a very Dallas Cowboys move. They’re going to have to give up the farm for a cornerback. They’re drafting 12. Draft his next prime, huh? You never know,” Daniel said in a discussion shared on Instagram.

According to Scoop City, a podcast from The Athletic, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has shown significant interest in Hunter. However, acquiring him would be a major challenge. The dynamic cornerback and wide receiver are projected to go within the top four picks, forcing Dallas to make a costly trade if they want him.

NFL draft expert R.J. White calculated what such a move might entail. Trading with the Cleveland Browns for the No. 2 overall selection would require the Cowboys to swap first-round picks, two future first-rounders, and a second-rounder. A trade with the New England Patriots at No. 4 might be slightly more feasible, potentially costing Dallas a first- and second-rounder next year, a sixth-rounder this year, and their No. 12 overall pick.

Hunter’s credentials speak for themselves. The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Fred Biletnikoff Award winner recorded 1,484 snaps last season—more than any player since 2017. He tallied 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 36 tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions.
