Rich Rodriguez’s Vision For the West Virginia Mountaineers

Rodriguez was impressed by the team’s energy during their first training session. The players had a good attitude, and he wanted to build a base this season.

“The energy was incredible. The guys were looking forward to the opportunity to go on the gaskets,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez emphasized the foundations in football, noting that, although in practice, there were some positive results.

Whether it is to block, attack, or communicate, the coach said that detail is important. Good teams are built on good fundamental principles, and this will be a focal point as the Mountaineers advance through the spring.

“We did something right, but we should be better in the foundations,” said Rodriguez.  “Little things are important. You need to achieve more success in all areas, from blocking and fighting to gaming communication.”

Player development is Rodriguez’s main philosophy. He wants to create players who cannot only perform on the field but also transform into leaders and good citizens. Creating a responsible, trained culture is a formula for success, and Rodriguez is dedicated to its players to these values.

“This program is not just about football. This is about the development of our players, raising them and improving on the field and beyond,” he said.

Rodriguez sees the first spring practice as an important opportunity to lay the foundation for success in the future.

“We define the base here. Here, we have established a habit of overtaking us during the season,” the coach said.
