Elijah “Bo” Barnes Transfer Portal: Top 5 Potential Landing Spots For Texas LB

The Texas Longhorns suffered another setback, with Elijah “Bo” Barnes expected to enter the transfer portal. Inside Texas reported that the Longhorns’ freshman linebacker is going to look for better options.

During the 2025 season, Barnes played just four games. He will be the second Texas linebacker, after Liona Lefau, to enter the portal. Barnes’ decision is shocking because he showed flashes of his potential during the bowl game.

The Longhorns would’ve hoped to have Barnes in their long-term plan and develop him over the course of this offseason and next college football season to be one of their key pieces. It seems like Barnes is looking for results right now.

While this decision will affect the Longhorns’ roster and force them to fill up the position, the teams looking for a young and capable linebacker in the transfer portal would cherish this opportunity. Here are Barnes’ top five potential landing spots.

    Texas A&M

Texas A&M makes sense as an in-state SEC option with familiarity already built into the recruiting process. Barnes would stay close to home while stepping into a linebacker room that has seen turnover, giving him a clearer path to meaningful snaps than he had at Texas.

    SMU

SMU offers the most direct “homecoming” scenario. Returning to Dallas could provide Barnes with an immediate opportunity and a larger role, especially at a program that can sell him on being a defensive centerpiece rather than rotational depth early in his career. Considering he’s looking for instant results, Barnes might put the SMU Mustangs high up on his list.

    LSU

LSU remains a logical SEC landing spot due to its prior recruiting interest and proven track record of developing linebackers. A fresh start in Baton Rouge could allow Barnes to reset his trajectory while staying in a conference he’s already experienced.

In addition to that, Lane Kiffin, since his arrival, has been in an aggressive recruiting mode. He now has all the resources he lacked at Ole Miss, and he has proved that he can develop young talents into potential future stars.

    Oregon

Oregon stands out if Barnes is open to leaving the region but still wants a national contender. The Ducks have shown continued interest dating back to his recruitment, and the move would offer elite facilities, strong defensive development, and a new stage to reestablish himself.

    Ohio State

Ohio State would represent a high-upside swing built on long-term development and exposure. While playing time wouldn’t be handed to him immediately, the Buckeyes’ defensive infrastructure and reputation for producing NFL linebackers could appeal if Barnes is thinking beyond the short term.

The 6’1 LB will have plenty of options in front of him in the days to come.
