Amid Eli Drinkwitz Rumors, Soon-To-Be Former Big 12 HC Joins Fray In Michigan Head Coaching Search

Michigan has not yet found a head coach after firing Sherrone Moore over an “illicit relationship” with one of his staffers despite being married. Several coaches have been rumored for the job, including Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz. However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel has added another name into the mix, and that is an outgoing head coach for a Big 12 team.

Thamel revealed that while the school is not expected to hire any coach after Christmas, it does have three candidates lined up, including Drinkwitz and Washington head coach Jedd Fisch. These two coaches are still employed, however, the third one, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, is slated to leave the Utes after this season.

“There’s three candidates right now that I think are in their crosshairs, and that’s Eli Drinkwitz the Missouri coach, Jedd Fisch the Washington coach, and obviously soon to be former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. Those are considered gettable coaches for Michigan, and they all come with complications, obviously,” he said.

Thamel pointed out that Drinkwitz still has to play a bowl game on the 27th, while Fisch is still trying to retain players in Washington who are trying to enter the transfer portal, making him an unlikely candidate. This leaves Whittingham, who has announced he is retiring by the end of the season but has also expressed interest in coaching elsewhere.

Drinkwitz also has a big chance still, as he is only playing in a bowl game, not the CFP. However, Missouri just hired away offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey from Michigan, which leaves a lot of questions about him possibly transferring to Ann Arbor.

Another name being floated is Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, though he is reportedly not in that initial list of candidates that the school has spoken to, according to Thamel. Along with the other three, the four of them appear to be the favorites.

Michigan Also Looking At Other Possible Candidates

Aside from the four above-mentioned candidates who are considered the favorites, there are also a few others that the University of Michigan is reportedly looking into.

One of them is current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who has already been vetted by Michigan and has extensive coaching experience. He is an assistant to John Harbaugh, the brother of former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, so there may be connections there.

Another is Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, who has shown that he is a very good recruiter for the Bulldogs, something that Michigan needs right now.
