Drew Allar’s Impressive Growth Under OC Andy Kotelnicki Gets Major Praise from Analyst Greg McElroy

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar has impressed everyone with his growth under offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy is among those who believe Allar’s game has reached a whole new level recently.

According to the ESPN analyst, Kotelnicki’s coaching has helped unlock Allar’s true potential. Therefore, after throwing for 3,021 yards last season, Allar is primed to excel even more in 2025. Greg McElroy Lauds Drew Allar’s Growth

McElroy shared his top 10 quarterbacks heading into the 2025 season in a recent ESPN analysis video. He ranked Allar, Penn State’s third-year starter, at number four.

McElroy highlighted Allar’s strong performance in the 2024 season, where he threw for 3,021 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. McElroy credited Andy Kotelnicki, Penn State’s offensive coordinator, for helping Allar improve, especially in throwing deep passes.

“Last year, with new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, you saw them start to take the top off the defense with a lot more regularity,” McElroy said.

He added that the third-year starter’s confidence grew as he became effective at throwing to all parts of the field. “He’s already a very efficient player, but now he’s an efficient player in every corner of the field,” he noted.

In earlier seasons, Penn State’s offense relied more on running and short passes. Some analysts criticized the Penn State QB for not making enough deep throws. But with Kotelnicki’s help, Allar has started using his strong arm and athleticism to make big plays, keeping defenses on their toes.

Kotelnicki also praised his hunger to improve. He said, “He’s always asking, ‘Why did this happen?’” This mindset has helped Allar become better at making decisions and anticipating plays. McElroy agreed, saying, “The talent is there, and his decision-making is getting better.”

In addition to his passing yards, Allar also ran for 289 yards and six touchdowns, showing he’s a dual-threat quarterback. McElroy believes this mix of skill and intelligence makes Allar stand out. Going into his third year, the young star is expected to take the next step and become one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
