The Penn State Nittany Lions have struggled this year, losing their past three games. The team is now facing even more adversity as its starting quarterback, Drew Allar, will miss several months after undergoing surgery for a broken ankle. According to an Instagram post from the espncfb account, Allar underwent successful surgery on Wednesday on his left ankle. The timeline for his return is still being worked out, but he will likely miss several months.

Drew Allar is in his fourth season with the Nittany Lions. Through six games this season, he completed 103 of 159 passing attempts for 1100 yards and eight TDs. He also had three interceptions. Allar was also an effective rusher this season, running for 172 yards and one TD on 36 carries.

Drew Allar’s Ankle Injury Could End His College Career

Penn State’s hopes of qualifying for the College Football Playoff were likely already finished after last week’s loss to Northwestern. The team has now lost three games in a row, effectively ending any hopes they had of another postseason run. Now, with the possibility that Drew Allar could miss the rest of the season, Penn State could be in for a rough final stretch of the season.

The big picture impact of this injury is that there is a strong chance it ends Allar’s college football career. While this was only his third season as a starter, Allar appeared in six games as a freshman. As a result, he will not have any eligibility left after this season unless he is granted a medical exemption.

As a result, Allar will likely start preparing for the NFL once he is healthy. Allar had the opportunity to enter the NFL draft after last season, but opted to return to Penn State to compete for a national championship and improve his draft standing. According to Pro Football Focus, Allar is the No. 123-ranked player in the 2026 draft class and the No. 10-ranked quarterback.
