Before the 2025 college football season, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was widely viewed as a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Allar has thrown for over 24 touchdowns and at least 2,600 yards in each of the last two seasons, and has had Penn State viewed as one of the best teams in the nation.
However, in a drastic turn of events, Allar suffered a season-ending injury during a shocking upset against Northwestern (22-21). Allar suffered a double hit late in the Northwestern matchup in a collision that seemed to affect his lower body, as he was seen limping to the sideline. Head coach James Franklin confirmed in the post-game presser that his starting quarterback was “done for the year.”
This will effectively conclude Drew Allar’s season as Franklin turns to Ethan Grunkemeyer for the remainder of the campaign.
The Nittany Lions have dropped three games in a row after being viewed as one of the nation’s best teams heading into the 2025 season. On Sunday, the Nittany Lions suffered their third-straight loss in a row, with a 22-21 upset loss to unranked Northwestern. They became the first team in history to lose two games in a row as 20-plus point favorites.
Penn State suffered a much bigger loss in the game, losing Allar, who suffered an injury.

What Happened to Penn State QB Drew Allar?
In Saturday’s game against Northwestern, Drew Allar suffered a season-ending injury.
Allar was hit on a run in the fourth quarter as he was hit by two Northwestern players, being hit low and being hit high. Allar immediately grabbed his ankle and needed help off the field. He did not return to the game. Redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer came in to replace the 21-year-old.

Following Penn State‘s loss, head coach James Franklin confirmed that Allar is out for the season due to the injury. The specific injury is unknown at this time.
Once viewed as a top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Allar’s draft stock could be heavily affected after today’s injury. He doesn’t have eligibility for the college football season, unless he submits a medical waiver for next season.
If Allar enters the draft next year, he could be a late-round pick or maybe even an undrafted free agent.
