Michigan fired Sherrone Moore as their head coach after two years of his tenure with the program, citing an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, and replaced him with Kyle Whittingham, the former Utah head coach, as their 22nd leader.
Whittingham is considered a good fit for the program by many analysts due to his discipline and ability to lead, which is exactly what Michigan needs amidst its chaotic recent years, following the sign-stealing controversy, Jim Harbaugh’s exit, and now Moore’s firing.
Michigan is considered among the best programs in the country as they were able to finish the 2025 college football season despite all the off-field distractions their ex-head coach was going through. Talking about it, Whittingham told Rich Eisen in a recent conversation that the Wolverines don’t need a rebuild, they just need a reboot.
“The place doesn’t need a rebuild. It needs a reboot of trust and getting rid of the drama and just getting back to playing Michigan football without all the distractions. You know, the one thing is it didn’t come from the players. You know, the players were not involved. It wasn’t some player, you know, issue, It was, just the peripheral. And so guys here have a great attitude. I met with every single one of them at the bull site last week. Just quality young men care about academics, excited to be at Michigan, But they’ve dealt with a lot over the last few years. And so that’s where they’re at,” Whittingham said.

Dave Portnoy Downplays OSU’s Win In 2025 Against Michigan Amid Sherrone Moore’s Drama
Michigan Superfan, Dave Portnoy, and Urban Meyer, had a $1,000 bet for “The Game” this year, which was won by the ex Ohio State head coach.
While Portnoy did keep his word and sent a $1,000 cheque to Meyer, he boldly shared that he believes this year’s game should have an asterisk as the Michigan head coach’s head was potentially not really in the game.
“I don’t know that Ohio State Ryan Day even gets credit for that victory in light of everything that was circling around that. I mean, I could have beaten us at that point. We didn’t have a coach. There was so much Mickey Mouse stuff going. We didn’t know that,” Portnoy said.
The Wolverines lost the game against Ohio State in a 27-9 matchup in 2025.
