Saints Hire Doug Nussmeier, Does That Mean Garrett Nussmeier Could Be NOLA-Bound?

The Saints hire Doug Nussmeier as OC, reuniting him with Kellen Moore. A former Saints QB, he also coached Jalen Hurts and has ties to LSU.

The New Orleans Saints hired Doug Nussmeier as their new offensive coordinator. He has already worked with several teams with the franchise’s new head coach, Kellen Moore. Most recently, Nussmeier was the quarterbacks coach for Jalen Hurts and the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles.

Doug Nussmeier’s Coaching Career and Praise From Eagles’ Nick Sirianni

Previously, Nussmeier was the quarterbacks coach, while Moore was the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys (2019-2022) and Los Angeles Chargers (2023).

Nussmeier, 54, was a quarterback during his playing days and has a long history with the Saints. The Saints drafted him in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL Draft out of Idaho. He played four seasons in New Orleans before playing for the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears.

Nussmeier’s son, Garrett, is looking to have a great career of his own and be selected in next year’s NFL Draft. Garrett is coming off a great season at LSU where he threw for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He led the Tigers to a 9-4 record in 2024, which included a 44-31 bowl win over Baylor.

Next year’s quarterback class has a lot of depth. But if Nussmeier continues to play at a high level, there’s a chance he could reunite with his dad in New Orleans.

Before his new gig with the Saints, Doug Nussmeier served as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Fresno State, Washington, Florida, Michigan, and Alabama.

In 2012, he was Alabama’s offensive coordinator when they won the national championship.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had a lot of praise for the new Saints offensive coordinator.

“I think he’s an outstanding coach who played the position at a very high level in the NFL and in big-time college football,” Sirianni said of Nussmeier in December. “I just think he’s done a really nice job of coaching Jalen and coaching the other guys. I think he’s fit in really well with our staff. Obviously, he and Kellen have a prior relationship.”
