Don Brown was named UMass head coach before the 2022 college football season, marking his return to Amherst after a 13-year absence. Brown has deep roots with the program, but what is his salary, contract, and net worth as the Minutemen head coach for the 2024 college football campaign?
Don Brown’s Salary and Contract in 2024
Brown signed a five-year contract with UMass in December 2021 worth a minimum of $4 million with a salary of $800,000 in 2024.
The salary comprises a $700,000 base salary and $100,000 in deferred compensation, reports The Berkshire Eagle. A “robust bonus package” is also on offer to Brown, and a staff salary pool worth $500,000.
The contract completed Brown’s return to Amherst, where he had previously led the Minutemen to the best period in their history. The UMass head coach had his first stint between 2004 and 2008 and finished with a winning record in all five seasons.
Brown then left UMass to become defensive coordinator at Maryland and has had several high-profile coordinator jobs since. The Minutemen head coach was most recently defensive coordinator with the Arizona Wildcats in 2021 before he returned to Amherst.
However, Brown was tasked with turning the UMass program around on his return, as the Minutemen haven’t had a winning season since he left. The program entered the FBS in 2012 when they upgraded to join the MAC. The program has sat as an independent since 2016 but will return to its original conference for the 2025 college football campaign and beyond.
On returning to Amherst, Brown said in his opening statement, “Sometimes you have to go away, a long way from home, to realize where you belong.”
“This particular opportunity, it was the right time, and I was just fortunate I was in the right place,” Brown continued. “The challenges that are in front of me, I’m excited about. I’m passionate about the University of Massachusetts and its players. It’s a great opportunity.”
“I’m a challenge guy. I love challenges. This is a place I feel like I can make a difference. After a couple of days, I knew I made the right decision.”
Since returning to Amherst, Brown finished with a 1-11 record in 2022 and a 3-9 record in 2023.
Brown’s Net Worth
Brown’s net worth is not reported. However, USA Today’s Salary Tracker shares that the UMass head coach has earned a minimum of $10 million since 2009.
This figure does not include Brown’s undisclosed salary with Boston College and also doesn’t include salaries earned before 2009.
