Does Florida QB DJ Lagway Have Enough WR Talent to Succeed in 2025?

The Spring season is once again upon us. It’s a season that brings some speculation, hope, and excitement for college football and all the fans. The spring workouts are underway, and teams are figuring out how to shape their team for the upcoming season. For Florida, their wide receiver room is full of hope and excitement, which is good news for DJ Lagway.

The Gators, who are one of the best college basketball teams in the country, could very well find themselves back in the title picture for college football. Lagway is a great quarterback, and despite the speculation on if he has the talent to succeed, many think he does.

Does DJ Lagway Have Enough WR Talent to Succeed in 2025?

One of the biggest SEC questions last year came from Florida. Despite its simplicity, it also got Florida and their fans thinking: does Florida have what it takes to unlock Lagway’s potential? More importantly, did they do the right thing by him and get him some good weapons? Now, the answer is abundantly clear.

On a recent episode of The Hard Count for On3 Sports, JD PicKell spoke about Florida, Lagway, and spoke about why Florida’s wide receiver room could make or break Lagway’s 2025-26 season. PicKell expects Florida to hit the transfer portal hard to build around their new young star quarterback.

“Florida’s got a lot of pieces. They got a lot of pieces. But what good is a quarterback if you don’t have a guy to go win one-on-one for you on the perimeter? What good is DJ Lagway’s ability to throw the ball downfield if we don’t have anybody that can win to go catch the football downfield for him?”

Florida made a splash by landing wide receiver J’Michael Sturdivant, a move that the Gators believe is a “home run.” Those close to the program believe the Gators have no other plans to dip into the transfer portal for another wide receiver. The fact that Florida feels this way, means they’ve got a ton of faith in the receivers they have.

Sturdivant is a massive get for Florida and could very well be one of the biggest weapons for Florida in the upcoming college football season.

The gators are also buzzing about their freshmen receivers. Most notably, Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson. Both Brown and Wilson possess some great potential. Brown is a five-star talent, and Wilson is a big-bodied playmaker.

On top of the two freshman, there’s also Nan Montgomery who is catching eyes this spring at practices with some of his catches. Eugene Wilson is also slated to see more action from the slot receiver position this season.

This is a big what if, but Lagway could have a very successful season. If the potential for the freshman come true, and Sturdivant continues to have a big season, we could be in for a breakout year from Lagway. This could be a very fun season for the Gators and their fans.
