‘Texas Is Pretty High on My List’ — No. 1 DL Prospect James Johnson Praises Longhorns Visit

On3’s No. 4-ranked defensive line prospect and No. 7-ranked prospect out of Florida for 2026, James Johnson, was reportedly impressed after a visit to Texas. The four-star recruit, top of his position in the state, has received attention from just about every major program across the country, including Georgia, Penn State, USC, and Alabama.

Johnson, who attends Miami Northwestern Senior High, just hours away from his hometown of Cape Coral, Florida, has also been recruited by Florida and Miami, which have a combined 49.2% chance of landing the lineman, according to On3’s predictions.

Top DL Prospect James Johnson Praises Texas After Visit

But Texas may be gaining ground on Johnson’s recruitment, receiving high praise from Johnson after a visit last weekend.

“My visit to Texas was really good,” Johnson said. “I liked how welcoming they were with me and how good the coaches are, but my favorite thing about Texas is how they practice. I know they will be a great team in this upcoming season.”

“Since visiting Texas, I’d say Texas is pretty high on my list of schools and is definitely up there around the top… I’d say they have so much success because most of their players come from Florida and Texas,” he elaborated.

Texas’ 2026 recruiting class currently ranks 13th in the nation, a drop off from their No. 1 ranked 2025 class. The Longhorns have a quarterback, a wide receiver, and two offensive linemen currently signed to their four-player 2026 class.
