DJ Lagway has announced his departure from the Florida Gators, with the quarterback set to join the transfer portal ahead of the 2026 college football season.
Lagway departed after being one of the Gators’ most important players, but naturally got a lot of Florida fans angry, which prompted them to troll Lagway on his transfer portal announcement post on Instagram.
“why did I even buy your jersey😂😂😂”, wrote a fan.
“mcdonald’s is hiring”, stated a fan.
“Good you was sorry af & always injured”, said a fan.
“Good riddance 🤣🤣🤣🤣”, remarked a fan.
“Thanks for NOTHING💜”, stated another fan.
“You are soft for this”, called out a fan.

Meanwhile, amidst all of this trolling, Lagway’s departure from the Gators also received some support from a certain section of the fanbase.
“Go be great 2”, wrote a fan in support of Lagway’s decision.
“Y’all sick man 💯… swear as human society we hate on people so much it’s crazy”, remarked a fan reacting to all the hate Lagway got on his announcement post.

Lagway, in his announcement post, started with how thankful he is for God and for every blessing throughout his time playing college football, whilst also thanking the University of Florida for giving him an opportunity and sharing how grateful he is to be a part of such a program.
He also thanked his family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping him in his college football journey.
Lagway’s decision to join the transfer portal comes on the backdrop of the Gators finishing their 2025 campaign with an overall record of 4-8, which also included firing former head coach Billy Napier back in October. Former Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is now slated to head the Gators in their upcoming CFB campaign.

Could DJ Lagway Join JMU Under Billy Napier?
With Lagway leaving the Gators, there is a lot of speculation around his next destination, which could very well be under a familiar name. After being fired from the Florida-based program, James Madison University hired Billy Napier after their former head coach, Bob Chesney, left to coach UCLA for the upcoming season.
Having played under Napier, it will be interesting to see if the coach-player duo will reunite come next season.
Meanwhile, Lagway started the entire 2025 season for Florida, completing a little over 63% of his passes for over 2,200+ yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
Over his two‑year career in Gainesville, he was a Freshman All‑American and helped Florida to an 8‑win 2024 season and was also a top‑10 national recruit and the No. 1 dual‑threat QB in the 2024 class, so he is expected to be one of the most sought‑after quarterbacks in the portal.
