The Florida Gators are rallying around a major boost as sophomore QB DJ Lagway gets back to full throwing action, shaking off earlier concerns about his shoulder and hamstring injuries. Head coach Billy Napier has restated fears, declaring the problem is “very low” with Lagway’s recovery on track.
After a spring that tested the program, this news sparks renewed hope and excitement in Gainesville. With his return, Florida’s offense is assured to hit the ground running.

DJ Lagway Back on the Field, Billy Napier Not Worried About QB’s Status
Lagway, the team’s promising QB, was sidelined by a left hamstring injury during the second quarter of their game against Georgia in early November last year; the injury kept him from featuring in their subsequent games. On top of that, a lower-body injury added fuel to the fire of the uncertainty. Recent updates now show he is back on the field, and the mood is shifting from worry to relief.
Earlier this spring, fans were on edge. With the season opener against Long Island University nearing and a grueling SEC schedule waiting, the thought of missing DJ Lagway due to injury loomed like a worst-case scenario.
But Napier’s latest progress reports have flipped the script. “Concern is very low,” he says, and that’s not just coach-speak. It’s a sign the Gators are ready to roll with their star QB leading the charge.

Last year, as a true freshman in 2024, he didn’t just step up; he took over. After Graham Mertz went down, Lagway grabbed the reins and piloted the Gators to a 6-1 record in his starts. His big-play flair and cannon arm call attention, and he won hearts in Gainesville.
He hit 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 yards, tossing 12 touchdowns against nine picks. For a freshman, that’s not just solid; it’s the kind of stat line that projects potential, and Florida is building around that.
While he was out, the backups got their shot. Harrison Bailey, a transfer, true freshman Tramell Jones Jr., and walk-on Aidan Warner stepped into the spotlight. Napier’s been impressed, saying, “Aidan, Harrison, and Tramell are all getting significant reps and doing a really good job.”
