Boise State Broncos offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has announced his retirement from football. In a passionate, heartfelt message on social media, the veteran coach expressed his concerns about the current state of college football while praising the Broncos’ program.
Dirk Koetter Retires in Passionate Social Media Post
After 42 years of coaching at every level, Koetter has finally decided to retire following Boise State’s exit from the College Football Playoff. In a heavy social media post, the veteran didn’t hold back in his views on the future of college football, sharing how difficult it is for so-called “smaller” schools to compete in the transfer portal era.
Posting on Facebook, Koetter wrote, “As I step away (again) after 42 years of coaching at every level, I have a few things I want to get off my chest.”
“College football is changing rapidly, and maybe not for the better. Conference realignment, roster limitations, transfer portal, NIL, lack of a governing body with any power are all issues that have to be dealt with.”
Koetter is far from the first coach to speak out on the issues of NIL and the transfer portal. Last season, Chip Kelly famously resigned as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins to become the offensive coordinator due to the overburdening impacts of the modern recruiting game.
Speaking to the LA Times, Kelly shared that a college head coaching job now resembles that of a CEO, saying, “I can’t tell you how many coaches that have called me since I made this decision, who have said, ‘I’m two years behind you, brother’ that are thinking the exact same way.”
Koetter went on to share, “Our best players are getting offered between 2 and 10 times what we can offer.” Continuing, the former Broncos’ OC said, “We are losing recruits in the portal to schools that are just flat outbidding us. I know it’s not all about the money, and Coach D (Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson) and staff will undoubtedly continue to find the ‘right kind of guys,’ but money is an issue.”

Ashton Jeanty reportedly turned down the opportunity to transfer to big blue blood programs in the SEC and Big Ten to stay in Boise this summer. While the Heisman Trophy runner-up is expected to declare for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, the Broncos will be hoping that the elevation in relevancy, income, and coverage may lure more prominent names to Idaho.
While Koetter didn’t hold back on his opinions, he also shared a warm message with Broncos fans reflecting on the excellent job head coach Spencer Danielson is doing in Boise.
“BSU has two incredible leaders at the top right now in Jeramiah Dickey and Spencer Danielson. These are two men of character and the right men for the job at hand. These are the kind of men parents want their sons to play for because they really do want what’s best for the players and will develop them to the fullest.”
The Idaho Statesman reported in November 2024 that Danielson wanted Koetter to return in 2025. However, the longtime coach has decided to end his coaching career.
