Ever since California Golden Bears quarterback Devin Brown announced that he had entered the transfer portal, it was widely assumed that he would be playing at a different school come the 2026 season. However, it appears that there’s still room for a return to Berkeley, California.
On3 insider Pete Nakos wrote on X that a return to the California Golden Bears in the 2026 season is still on the cards for the former four-star recruit.
“A return to Cal for QB Devin Brown has not been ruled out as a possibility, sources tell

Brown was in his fourth season with the school, having transferred in from Ohio State, where he spent the first three seasons of his career. He has so far made only one career start, back in 2023 with the Buckeyes, and has seen limited playtime in 2025 with the Golden Bears.
As a prospect in the class of 2022, he was considered a four-star recruit, the fifth-best quarterback in the nation, and the second-best overall player in the state of Utah.

Devin Brown on His Connection With the Ohio State Buckeyes
When considering whether to transfer out of Ohio State for the 2025 season, Devin Brown spoke with the press about what led him to decide that a better future for him lay beyond the Buckeyes.
“You know, we came to that decision for me to, you know, figure out somewhere else. … Yeah, it was definitely hard. You know, I’ve been here for three years now and I love this place, I love this team. So it’s definitely hard to leave them,” Brown said prior to the 2024 Rose Bowl game.
“At the same time, you know, I made a promise to this team and I made a promise to these coaches coming back, you know, after the Cotton Bowl that I was going to help them go win these games and go finish out the season the right way. I wanted to stick to my word,” he added.
The move didn’t pan out as he expected, as he didn’t become the Golden Bears’ starter for the 2025 season. 2026 is likely to be his last shot at being a starter; whether he chooses to stay with California or leave, it’s a decision he shouldn’t make lightly.
