Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia recalled the time when former Jackson State Tigers head coach Deion Sanders tried to recruit him as the backup quarterback to his son, Shedeur Sanders.
During his interaction with Ryan Clark, Pavia revealed that Jackson State’s offer was his first from an FBS school. He noted what Sanders told him while recruiting him at the program.
“Called me, offered me, and it was my first FBS offer,” Pavia said. “And Coach Prime offered me at Jackson State, but he was so real, he was like, ‘Hey look, we’re looking for a backup. You ain’t playing over my son even if he gets hurt.’ I’m like, ‘At least he’s real,’ you know.”

The above revealation from Pavia has raised eyebrows over Sanders’ questionable recruiting strategy that he employed while his quarterback son was still in college.
“No wonder his programs don’t have talent aside from his boys and hunter,” one fan commented.
“Case in point.. when they both were in college you never heard of Pavia🤷🏿♂️” another added.
“Well that explains a lot about his coaching style😂” another stated.
“This is why everyone passed on sanders in the draft,” one fan commented.
“And still won’t play over him at the Browns 😂” another fan added.
“Straight like dat😂” another wrote.

Deion Sanders Supports Diego Pavia’s Heisman Case
Diego Pavia notched another great season for the SEC’s Vanderbilt and he is among the contenders to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy after leading the program to a 10-2 regular season record.
Deion Sanders has vouched for Pavia to win the coveted award, given to the best overall player in college football. Sanders did so by reposting a tweet backing Pavia’s candidacy. Sanders’ son, Deion Sanders Jr., also tweeted, urging fans to vote for Pavia.
Pavia is named one of the four finalists for the 2025 Heisman Trophy, alongside Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin, and Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love. Pavia threw for 3,192 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, with 8 interceptions, while also adding 826 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns.
The award ceremony will take place in New York on December 13.
