Deion Sanders Jokingly Points At Racial Bias As Main Reason Behind Failed Spring Game Proposal With Syracuse: “Should’ve Slid It To Belichick”

During spring practice, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders came up with a new idea. He and Syracuse head coach Fran Brown came up with the idea of holding joint practices together during the spring, followed by a scrimmage. It is something that would have allowed players to practice in a more competitive environment during the spring.

However, the idea will shut down for this year. There is hope it could be implemented in the future, but the NCAA did not allow it during the spring this year. On Thursday, Deion Sanders appeared on the “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast and joked about how racial bias could have been a reason the joint practices and spring game were rejected.

“They weren’t about to let two brothers do it first, you know that,” Deion Sanders said (Timestamp 14:10). “You think they gonna let me and Coach Fran (Brown) do it first? You know that wasn’t gonna happen. We had all great ideas, man. We was gonna have study hall together. We were gonna have everything. We were gonna incorporate speakers to come in for both teams together. We was gonna be family and then compete.

“Practice together just like the pros. Joint practice, joint practice, then we compete. I shouldn’t have thought of it, I should’ve slid it to Belichick. Like, coach, I got something for you.”

Despite Being Shut Down, Deion Sanders Believes His Spring Game Proposal Will Come to Fruition in the Future

After making his joke about sliding his joint practice and spring game proposal to North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick, Deion Sanders spoke about how he thinks his idea will come to fruition in the future. He brought up the fact that there is a market to be tapped into at that time of year since both college football and the NFL are out of season.

“The networks are going to be all over it because there’s no true programming at that time of year,” Deion Sanders said (Timestamp 15:10). “It’s a money maker for both parties. It’s business as well as it’s entertainment.”

While the committee denied Deion Sanders’ proposal this past spring, the report indicated that it would continue to discuss the possibility in future seasons. Whether that means joint spring practices and games will happen next year is unclear, but it seems likely that the first of these spring setups will come in the next few seasons.
