During Coach Prime’s appearance on Asante Samuel’s “Say What Needs to Be Said” podcast, Coach Prime shared how an emotional moment with a current Buffalo player almost brought him to tears.
Sanders was responding to Samuel’s question about whether this upcoming season would be tougher without his son, Shedeur, at QB. The moment suddenly turned personal for Sanders when he told the story of something that happened just a few days earlier.
“One of my kids, I’m not going to say who it was, came to me the other day,” Sanders explained, his voice carrying clear emotion.
He said, “Coach Prime, you know that walk you did with Shedeur and Shilo? You know we’re still going to walk, right?”
The unnamed player was alluding to a pregame tradition Sanders had established with his sons during his time at Colorado.
Sanders admitted the player’s words hit him hard. “I said, ‘Boy, you trying to make me cry, man. You ain’t going. You trying to make me cry,'” he recalled, clearly moved by the memory. “You don’t understand how that feels, man.”
Both Shedeur and Shilo are now professional football players, with Shedeur being drafted by the Cleveland Browns and Shilo being signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.

Deion Sanders Embraces Single Role After Years of Coaching His Sons
Although the player’s proposal clearly moved Sanders, he also expressed some relief regarding entering a new chapter in his coaching life. For the first time since arriving in Colorado, Sanders is no longer faced with the duality of acting as the coach and father to players on his roster.
“The best thing about it, I don’t have to be coach and dad anymore,” Sanders explained. “I can just be the coach. I don’t have to wear two hats. I just get to wear one hat, and I’m happy.”
This is a completely new situation for Sanders, who has spent the past few years managing the delicate balance of coaching his kids and his responsibility to the rest of the team, calling himself the honest broker to ensure the players understood he was part of the team and not just a father. It created a unique challenge for Sanders that is now behind him.
Sanders spoke exuberantly in regard to what he is witnessing from his team during early practices.
“Our first three practices have been phenomenal, man,” he said, his excitement evident. “This is the second year. And also, Coach Sherm, this is the second year in the defense.”
Deion Sanders has made a return to Colorado after his cancer battle, bringing renewed energy and inspiration to the Buffaloes as he leads them into the upcoming season.
