There are not many coaches in college football that have shown the ability to turn around programs like Deion Sanders, the coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Deion Sanders arrived to Boulder in 2023 fresh off the Buffs going 1-11 the previous season. Coach Prime brought in some mega talent like his son and star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the former number one player in the country Travis Hunter.
In just his second year at Colorado coach Prime led the Buffs to a 9-4 season, their best record since 2016. Now the Buffs have awarded Prime with a mega contract extension, keeping him in Boulder until 2030.

Fans React to Coach Prime’s Contract Extension
Colorado extended coach Prime to a five-year, $54 million contract that earns him well over $10 million per season.
As pointed out by Spotrac, this contract makes him the fourth highest-paid coach in all of college football.
Deion Sanders’ new 5 year, $54M contract with Colorado makes him the 4th highest average paid NCAAF coach.
1. Kirby Smart, $13.2M
2. Ryan Day, $12.5M
3. Dabo Swinney, $11.1M
4. Deion Sanders, $10.8M
5. Steve Sarkisian, $10.6M— Spotrac (@spotrac) March 28, 2025
There were many mixed reactions throughout the college football world to this contract. Some believe Prime hasn’t earned anything without a playoff appearance.
“For 8-4 seasons is nasty work,” one fan said.
Another fan felt that Colorado devoting all this money to Sanders could hurt the program down the line: “Gonna set Colorado back 50 years with that contract.”
Other fans were just flat-out surprised about the amount of money that Coach Prime got, “Yoo that’s a lot of money.”
However, most fans were fired up for Sanders and felt that he was deserving of the contract, “He truly deserves it, given his hard work, leadership, and the incredible success he’s achieved.”

However you may feel about the contract extension, it’s hard to say Deion hasn’t earned it at Colorado. Coach Prime took a program that barely anyone ever spoke about and made it the center of national media attention. Not only does Sanders produce on the field, but the impact he’s made on the university itself and Boulder as a whole is massive.
When Sanders first arrived in Colorado, the Buffs couldn’t even afford his contract, and now, just two short years later, he’s one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.
