‘I Love It’ — Deion Sanders Embraces Coaching Without Sons Shedeur, Shilo in 2025

As Shedeur Sanders gets ready to be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shilo Sanders will be getting ready to do the same. This leaves Deion Sanders as the sole remaining Sanders family member on the Colorado Buffaloes.

While having his father as a coach definitely helped, Shedeur accomplished a lot in his time at Colorado and put the Buffaloes back on the map after two decades of just being downright bad. Now, Deion will have to get used to life without his sons on the team, and spoiler alert: he “loves” it.

Deion Sanders Embraces Coaching Without Sons Shedeur and Shilo for Colorado

Deion Sanders got back on the microphone on Monday for Colorado, speaking to the media ahead of his team’s second week of practice. Of the questions asked, some were about Julian Lewis, some were about Kaiden Saltor, some were about the quarterback battle, but most were about what was next for the team following his son’s step to the next level.

“A couple quarterbacks are fighting for who’s going to be who, [but] we don’t know,” Sanders said in his opening statement. “No one’s getting the nod right now. We’re testing both of them to see how they react to what [offensive coordinator] Pat [Shurmur] is throwing at them.”

This marks Sanders’ first time at the collegiate level without either of his sons on his team. In the press conference, Sanders spoke from the heart about how he loved coaching his sons and how he’ll also love coaching this new-look Colorado team.

“I love it because I only have to wear one hat, and you don’t understand how much I appreciate that,” Sanders said. “When you’re a dad and a coach, you’re wearing two hats. You coach your butt off, but naturally, you’re making sure your kids are alright at the same time, simultaneously.”

“I’ve adopted kids on this team that I love to life, and I’m watching them as well, but it’s nothing like your two biological kids. And you can’t help but focus on those young men and see how they’re doing. So it’s different for me. I’m sure it’s different for them, but I’m loving the process. I truly am.”

As fun as it is to coach your kids, it also comes with some unnecessary drama from the public. For example, many questioned Deion Sanders when Shedeur wouldn’t play up to par about Deion giving him a longer leash because he is his kid. Deion experienced this when he named Shedeur the starting quarterback almost immediately after he took over.

Thankfully, this worked out for Colorado, as Shedeur played fantastically. However, on a team with Shedeur and Shilo, Deion will be forced to answer new questions. Perhaps the first and most important one to answer isn’t so simple: What’s next?
