Coach Prime Sends Heartfelt Message to Son, Shedeur Sanders, Reacts to $4.6 Million Rookie Deal

Following the completion of NFL rookie minicamps, the 2025 NFL Draft class is signing their rookie deals in preparation for the fall season’s beginning.

Colorado HC Deion Sanders, the father of Cleveland fifth-round pick QB Shedeur Sanders, shared a strong message for his son, comparing his rookie deal to his own in 1989.

Deion Sanders Uses Rookie Deal Comparison to Motivate Shedeur Sanders

By now, it’s obvious that former Shedeur Sanders’ NFL Draft experience didn’t go as planned. The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback fell to the fifth round (No. 144 overall) and was taken by the Cleveland Browns, who also selected Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel the night before.

Through and after the humbling wait, Deion Sanders remained supportive of his son, who will try to climb up the Browns’ passer depth chart to get playing time. He’s also vying for a chance behind veterans Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco.

Coach Prime offered Shedeur Sanders some encouragement in a recent social media post.

“@shedeursanders Proud Father I am!!” Deion Sanders captioned an Instagram post on Tuesday. “I love my kids and I pushed my kids to be greater to be better to correct my wrongs & magnify my rights. My kids are built for whatever comes their way. We’re prepared for whatever because I got them no matter what!. Thank you Jesus. #Dad.”

The photo Coach Prime posted shows that Sanders’ son will make more on his rookie contract—$4.6 million—than his father did—$4.4 million—despite the Hall of Famer being taken fifth overall in the 1989 NFL Draft.

The younger Sanders is known for displaying confidence like his father’s, whose high-stepping touchdown returns dot NFL Films highlight reels.

“I know who he is,” Coach Prime said of Shedeur in February. “When I’m not there, I know who he is. When the game is on the line, I know who he is. When the lights are on him and everybody’s praising and clapping for him, I know who he is. He’s gonna be consistently who he is.

“Now, he has some swagger. He inherited that.”

Earlier this month, Shedeur Sanders discussed his arrival in Cleveland. Since it re-entered the NFL over 25 years ago, Cleveland has been waiting for a signal-caller to be the true face of its franchise. He hopes to be that for the passionate fanbase.

“It’s been extremely well, I would say,” Shedeur said of his introduction. “Really, I feel like Browns fans, they just want something to hope for. They’ve been wanting that for so long. I’m here to change that, I’m here to actually give what they want.”

If he can emerge from a quarterback competition this summer to give himself a chance to show what he can do, Browns fans will be eager to see.
