Is Deion Sanders Leaving Colorado? Coach Prime Sets Record Straight On Retirement Rumors

Deion Sanders surprised everyone when he revealed he was free of cancer. As relieved as the college football fans are after hearing this news, it has also sparked some legit concerns amongst Sanders’ diehards. Is Coach Prime leaving Colorado soon? Well speculations have been aplenty.

After a storied playing career in the MLB and NFL, Sanders further solidified himself as a coach for the Colorado Buffaloes. But Sanders, present alongside his medical team for the press conference, has just set the record straight. As noted by Colorado beat reporter Oliver Hayes, Sanders said:

“You probably thinking something gonna happen that ain’t gonna happen…So wonderful seeing the team yesterday…”

From this, it’s very clear Coach Prime isn’t going anywhere. This leaves all of the insider reports in the fluke that had claimed Deion Sanders had allegedly prepared to step down from his coaching role at Colorado following this press conference.

A few days back, Sanders had sent out a message on his X account, saying he was, “Back and Feeling Great.”

Coach Prime had pulled up to the press conference in a proper cowboy hat and outfit, which might also have many fans wondering if he is going to coach the Dallas Cowboys next. Well again, that’s not the case either. Sanders has returned to Boulder to begin preparation for the 2025 college football season, with the fall camp scheduled in a few days.

Deion Sanders stepping down from his coaching role has been a recurring rumor

Though the rumors keep recurring, Deion Sanders has clarified several times that he is not leaving Colorado. However, in some way or other, the rumors do find their way to the fans.

In December 2024, Sanders addressed his contract extension talks with Colorado as a final ultimatum to clarify all such chatter. On “The Rich Eisen Show,” Sanders said:

“We’re trying to work something out here, as you speak. I’m not going to lie about that, as you speak. I have one of the best AD’s in the country, Rick George, and i’m confident that we are going to get something done.” (12:25)

Coach Prime’s contract with Colorado runs until 2027. He had signed a five-year, $29.5 million deal in 2023. As per the confidence he has shown in Colorado’s management, it seems possible to see a few more years of Coach Prime at the sidelines.
