With their 29-22 loss to West Virginia this Saturday, the Colorado Buffaloes were out of contention for bowl games in December. The season has gone from bad to worse for Deion Sanders and company. In fact, it has been by far the worst season the program has had under him.
Their record moved to 3-7, which means they will have a losing record for the second time under Coach Prime. The reality is that 2025 was always going to be a transitional year for the Buffaloes, with the loss of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL. However, this has been worse than most fans expected.
After the 29-22 defeat to the West Virginia Mountaineers this Saturday afternoon, Sanders said in his post-game press conference:
“We are better than this, and they deserve better than this. I want better than this, I feel like I coach better than this, I feel like we got players who are so much better than what the production that we’ve been putting out… I feel like we got the nucleus inside the locker room that we should be getting done. I don’t think we have played a team that’s athletically and physically better than us. I really don’t.”

What Has Happened To Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes This Season?
The Buffaloes have been showing the same problems they did last year: a mediocre defense, a fragile offensive line, and a nonexistent running game. The big difference this time around is that they don’t have individual standouts to make up for system-wide issues.
The lack of high individual performers like Travis Hunter and especially Shedeur Sanders has been there for everyone to see. The quarterback position, in particular, has been a significant problem, with a plethora of players taking a stab at the starting gig. Kaidon Salter, Ryan Staub, and Julian Lewis have all taken turns at the starting quarterback position.
Over their last five games, the Buffaloes have started Lewis and Salter twice, and Staub once. No team can advance with that level of inconsistency at the most critical position in the game.
