Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has had a lot to deal with in recent months. Most notably, he had to deal with a cancer diagnosis, surgeries, and recovery. Additionally, while all this was going on, he had to watch as his son, former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, had a historic draft slide.
Shedeur was projected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, but he slid to the fifth round. Character concerns were rumored to be the chief cause for his slide. On Thursday, Deion Sanders appeared on the “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast and discussed how it felt to watch his son slide in the draft while he was dealing with cancer.
“Is it character? What was it? I talked to both owners, as well as both head coaches, and the GM, so we had a clear understanding. So, it wasn’t me,” Deion Sanders said (26:35). I got to be healed. That’s one thing I’m not healed from yet. I’m healed from cancer, but I’m not healed from that yet.
“That was one of the hardest because I was dealing with the cancer and I knew I had to go back and have another surgery when the draft was going on,” he added.

Deion Sanders’ Son, Shedeur Sanders, Shines at Cleveland Browns Training Camp
Shedeur Sanders’ draft slide resulted in him getting selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft. While the Browns do not have a definitive starter, they have one of the most complicated QB rooms in the NFL. Four players are competing for the starting job this season: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders.
Heading into training camp, Sanders was viewed as the fourth-string QB. He was then the only QB not going reps with the first-team offense during the first week of training camp. Despite that, he maintained a positive attitude, only focusing on what he could control.
On Monday, the fifth day of training camp, the Browns had players perform drills in pads for the first time. Sanders had the best performance among quarterbacks. He completed all nine of his passes, including two TD passes.

While one good performance does not push him into the starting position, it shows that he is in the mix and should be competitive throughout training camp.
