Deion Sanders and Brett Favre were teammates for a very short stint with the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. Sanders was already an established player with the team, having joined them in 1989 as a first-round pick.
In a way, this was Sanders’s breakthrough season. He earned his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. Favre, on the other hand, was a fresh rookie out of Southern Miss, who was picked in the second round of that year’s draft.
Nonetheless, Favre only spent one season with the Falcons, being moved to Green Bay during the offseason. On Monday, in an episode of “New Heights” with the Kelce brothers, Deion Sanders revealed the real reason behind Favre’s departure from Atlanta:
“The reason he was traded to Green Bay is because Brett used to tell the starting quarterback, Chris Miller, at the time, ‘Hey, go on out and mess it up. I’ll be in by the third quarter,’… Serious man, Brett was crazy man. Brett was an unbelievable talent. We knew he was going to be a guy, like his rookie year, he didn’t know what, you know, what was going on, where the ball was going… They had to get him out of there because he was putting too much pressure on the starter.” Said Coach Prime on New Heights (22:56)
Interestingly, it was in 1991 that starting quarterback Chris Miller had his best season in the NFL, where he led the Falcons to a record of 9-5 and was a Pro Bowl selection that year. Miller was then traded to the St. Louis Rams in 1994.

Deion Sanders on Why Baltimore Ravens Wouldn’t Have Been a Good Fit for Shedeur Sanders
In the same show, Deion Sanders revealed that during this year’s draft, while his son Shedeur Sanders was dropping through several rounds, they got calls from the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens.
Ultimately, Sanders’ camp didn’t believe either team would’ve been a good fit for his son. His explanation was simple: why would he want to be a backup?
“How in the world can somebody fault him for thinking, ‘Why in the world would I go back up Lamar for 10 more years?’ Who comes in with that mindset?” Deion said. “Where do these guys come from that sit on these platforms and say, ‘You should’ve sat behind and learned the game and developed.’ When have the pros developed anybody? By the time you get to the NFL they expect you to know what you need to do and do it, or somebody else is gonna get in there and do it.” (13:00)
In the end, Shedeur Sanders ended up with the Cleveland Browns. While he didn’t have a chance to become the starter for the start of the 2025 season, that job went to veteran Joe Flacco. He will challenge for the job in the long run against fellow 2025 draftee Dillon Gabriel.
