David Pollack Takes Clear Stance On Deion Sanders’ Coaching Style Despite ‘Flash, Sizzle and Sunglasses’

David Pollack, a former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker and current sports analyst, has stepped up to defend Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and his coaching techniques. On his “See Ball Get Ball” podcast, Pollack took issue with critics who only focus on Sanders’ flashiness.

“I know people think of the flash and the sizzle and the sunglasses and all that stuff, but like, he’s making those dudes wear the right things,” Pollack explained during his recent podcast episode. (28:04)

Pollack’s remarks come while Deion Sanders continues to face criticism for his coaching style. The former NFL Hall of Famer has not been on campus since late April while he recovers from an undisclosed illness and can’t make an impact in the critical off-season processes.

The comments from Pollack come from having witnessed Sanders in real-time during a practice at Jacksonville State many years ago. And apparently, he was able to see something that many casual observers would miss after that behind-the-scenes look.

The discussion of Sanders’ coaching philosophy comes as Colorado has its eye on another Big 12 season. The Buffaloes made headlines last season with their come-from-behind season under Sanders to go from 1-11 to 9-4. It will be interesting to see if the team can continue to impress with their on-field performances in the upcoming season.

David Pollack Highlights Deion Sanders’ Old-School Approach

What struck David Pollack most during that Jacksonville State practice wasn’t Deion Sanders’ famous charisma. Instead, he witnessed a fundamentally traditional approach to player development that emphasized core football values.

“He’s talking to them the right way. He’s old school, man,” Pollack noted, describing Sanders’ communication style with players.

Pollack said that Deion Sanders stressed toughness and accountability to his players, which are the things media has not focused on when covering him

Pollack is in a unique position to defend Sanders, given his own football pedigree. As an All-American linebacker who played for demanding coaches, Pollack knows what strong leadership looks like at the college level.

Sanders’ health adds additional uncertainty to Colorado’s upcoming season. The coach has disclosed scant details about his health indicating that he’s only going through something and has not fully recovered. Nevertheless, Sanders has been seen working out, playing basketball, and tennis and continuing his rehab while doing some light activities.
