The BYU Cougars are off to a poor start against Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game. The College Football Playoff committee has placed the Cougars at No. 11 ahead of the likes of Miami, Texas and Vanderbilt.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are up by 13-7 at halftime. The Cougars made the first splash but since then they have come empty on offense while allowing the Red Raiders to reach the redzone one time apart from two successful field goals.
This led to Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy taking a dig at CFP committee, while sarcastically remarking Cougars’ struggles.
“LETS GO!!!! BYU has already shown what morons the committee is in 1 quarter! Next play! next play! next play!!!! #provodave” he wrote on X.

In the ongoing game at AT&T Stadium, the Cougars reached to 7-0 lead, thanks to LJ Martin’s 10-yard rushing touchdown. The Red Raiders came alive in the second quarter, starting with a successful field goal, followed by Coy Eakin’s successful touchdown reception before another successful field goal.

What Will Happen To CFP Rankings If BYU Cougars Loses Against Texas Tech?
If BYU loses to Texas Tech, it will likely drop out of the top-12 rankings. According to the current playoff format, five conference championships will receive automatic bids while the rest will be picked based on the committee’s rankings.
Now that it is a conference championship game, a loss here would ideally knock out the Cougars out of contention to make the playoffs, since neither they’ll get the championship bid nor they would get an at-large spot because a loss would be added to their name.
What Will Happen To CFP Rankings If BYU Cougars Wins Against Texas Tech?
If BYU wins the Big 12 championship game against Texas Tech, they automatically earn a spot in the playoffs. Moreover, their win will also ensure that the Big 12 will be represented by two teams as Texas Tech qualifies through an at-large spot, since the committee has ranked them No. 4 currently. Thus, a Cougars’ win is more beneficial for their conference.
On the other hand, teams like Notre Dame, Miami, and others may be left out.
