It’s been an embarrassing 24 hours at Ann Arbor. On Wednesday, the Michigan Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Then on Wednesday evening, it was reported that local police had detained Moore on charges of assault.
This is my short list.
Gruden
Saban
Lanning
Jeff Monkin
Clark Lea
Kenny Dillingham
Deion— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) December 11, 2025
Suddenly, the Big Blue was left without a head coach. Fans and analysts immediately turned their minds to speculation about who could take over the storied program from the now disgraced coach. Dave Portnoy, a known Michigan fan, went on X to share his list of prospective candidates for the now vacant job at Ann Arbor:
“This is my short list. Gruden, Saban, Lanning, Jeff Monkin, Clark Lea, Kenny Dillingham, Deion,” wrote Portnoy on X
Admittedly, the list was a bit confusing. Especially considering it includes an embattled head coach like Deion Sanders and a clearly retired one like Nick Saban. Regardless, some names on the list, like Kenny Dillingham or Dan Lanning, could be interesting bets for the now vacant job at Ann Arbor.

Michigan Wolverines’ Statement on Sherrone Moore’s Firing
While there haven’t been many details regarding Sherrone Moore’s inappropriate relationship, the University of Michigan released the following statement explaining their reasoning behind the coach’s firing:
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” the school said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
A statement from athletic director Warde Manuel further explained:
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement Wednesday.
This way, the Sherrone Moore at Ann Arbor comes to an abrupt end. He led the Wolverines to a record of 18-8. Biff Poggi has been named interim coach, and he will likely lead the school during the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against the Texas Longhorns later this month.
