Following North Carolina’s embarrassing 28-12 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday night, Barstool Sports founder and internet personality Dave Portnoy didn’t mince words calling for UNC Head coach Bill Belichick’s dismissal from the program.
Portnoy shared his feelings on X, suggesting that Bill Belichick needs to retire whilst also questioning his competence as far as college football is concerned.
“Belichick needs to retire. This is disgusting. I’m not even sure he knows the score or where he is,” Portnoy wrote on X.

This harsh assessment came after the Tar Heels suffered through yet another abysmal performance as Wake Forest scored a touchdown in every quarter while North Carolina’s offense never crossed the goal line once.
The game saw the entire scoring output come from kicker Rece Verhoff, who converted four field goals from 40, 57, 42, and 47 yards out.
Things also got off to a horrible start when Wake Forest receiver Carlos Hernandez picked up a teammate’s fumble and ran 50 yards for a touchdown whilst also completing a 70-yard scoring catch in the third quarter of the game.
The loss dropped North Carolina to 4-6 on the season, putting them in serious danger of missing bowl season for the first time since 2019.
In order to keep their bowl hopes alive, UNC will have to win their next game at home against Duke this Saturday before traveling to face North Carolina State in their season finale later this November.

Bill Belichick Denies Rumors Around Future at UNC
This was not the first time Portnoy was criticizing Belichick and UNC’s performances. During an appearance on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff last month, Portnoy called Belichick his idol whilst crediting him for delivering multiple Super Bowl championships to New England, but also recognizing that college football is different altogether.
“I think this experiment will be done. I want Belichick out of college football. He’s not a college guy,” said Portnoy on the show.
Adding to the external criticism, there has also been speculation around Belichick’s potential move away from UNC. However, last month he addressed the reported rumors that he was seeking a buyout or trying to leave Chapel Hill.
“Reports about my looking for a buyout or trying to leave here is categorically false,” Belichick stated.
He also denied rumors connecting him to the New York Giants coaching vacancy post Brian Daboll’s dismissal from the New York-based franchise.
