The world of college football can be crazy at times, especially when it comes to the never-ending shakeups related to the transfer portal, recruits, and so much more. Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, joined JD PicKell on the On3 Sports Podcast, “The Hard Count.”
The two discussed the ever-changing world of college football and how Lanning, who’s in his fourth year as a head coach for Oregon, handles it. Lanning reveals his game plan to handle everything the sport of college football has to throw at him in PicKell’s exclusive interview with the Ducks head coach.

Oregon Coach Dan Lanning Explains How He Navigates College Football’s Constant Shakeups
On the podcast with PicKell, Lanning says college football changes every day and shares how staying prepared helps him handle the unexpected at Oregon. It seems to be working, as Oregon is coming off arguably one of its best seasons in college history before losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl game.
“You always want to be proactive and not reactive,” Lanning says. “I think early on in my career, you’re reacting to a lot of things that were unexpected. Now, you kind of expect the unexpected, and you’re a little bit prepared for those moments. If this happens, this is what we’ll do.”
“I would say the best trait for any coach in football right now is your ability to adapt,” Lanning says on what he feels is the toughest part of being a college football coach.
“The landscape of college football is changing by the day. You have to be ready to adapt and have a plan for everything. I feel like we’ve fallen into a rhythm here of a team that can adapt quickly.
Lanning was asked by PicKell what he expects the next adaptation he’ll have to make.
“If I can change anything about college football, I’d love for the season to marry up to the semester,” Lanning said. “I’d love for the season to end around Jan. 1, but this past year, it went late into January, and that affects recruiting.”
