Browns Speculated to Make Massive Move

One of the perennial storylines in recent NFL history is the Cleveland Browns’ how large of a mess the franchise remains. On one hand, Myles Garrett announces that he wants a trade. In reality, the demands serve nothing but as a ploy for a giant pay raise. While not truly a noble tact, the Browns caved, and that matters most.

On another front, team owner Jimmy Haslem decided to launch into this diatribe regarding his quarterback. Basically, the Browns, from a management perspective, want Watson. Yet, his exorbitant contract keeps him tethered to the team.

As a result, financial mobility becomes extremely difficult, in regard to roster management. Yet, with several needs to fill in the 2025 NFL Draft, speculation arose. Matthew Peterson on Chat Sports offered up this path to Cleveland, drafting both Shedeur Sanders and Penn State rusher Abdul Carter.

“Will Shedeur Sanders slide? I think there is a better chance of this happening better than people want to credit for. I think a lot of teams don’t look at Shedeur as a first-round prospect, and I think there is some evidence of that with how aggressive teams have been in the free agent market. I think there is a lot of momentum on Shedeur sliding a bit.”

    Upon Further Review

What momentum exists to justify this take?  Currently, we’re fully in lying season, the time of the year when teams leak false info to keep opponents/media off of their intended path. Too many leaks that fail to pan out and fizzle away like a damp sparkler.

Peterson brings this prediction full circle by thinking that Shedeur Sanders will somehow fall to 24th overall. Earlier, he speculated the Browns could trade back into the first round with the Minnesota Vikings.

    Reality

In no world, under no metric with Shedeur Sanders fall all the way to the bottom-third of the first round. Trading up for the 24th pick makes sense. However, Sanders and Cleveland do not make a good fit.

First, Deion, Sanders’ fathers, openly said that he would play an active role in his draft and signing process. Why would he sign off on his son, presumably starting as a backup for a team with little to no prospects of the team’s success? Most importantly, Watson’s contract is not only an albatross, but his contentious relationship with management threatens to sully any prospects for a good season.

    Disregarding History

For those asking about if a parent ever intervened in a drafting, look back to 2004. Eli Manning, fresh off a stellar career at the University of Mississippi, did not want to play in San Diego. His father, from New Orleans quarterback Archie, made his family’s intention clear: He didn’t want his son to play any parts for the Chargers.

With the first pick, the Chargers drafted Eli Manning. In what felt like an eyeblink, they sent Manning to New York for their newly minted first-round quarterback, Phillip Rivers. Imagine that multiplied by ten. Deion Sanders possesses a massive platform that could easily prevent the Browns from signing his son. Granted, Cleveland can still draft the former Colorado quarterback, but seeing that pen across the paper is far tougher.

    Bottom Line

A myriad of teams need a starting quarterback. At the same time, no one will let Shedeur Sanders sink past the top half of the first round.

With quality film available, it would be difficult to allow a potential franchise quarterback. In fact, one team could take a flyer and possibly flip the pick for a haul of draft picks.
