The BYU Cougars, coached by Kalani Sitake, may be unhappy with their position in the most recent College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee rankings. On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the selection committee released its latest rankings, as postseason play is about to begin. To the surprise of many, the Cougars are ranked No. 11.
With this, several from the collegiate football world are calling for BYU to be ranked higher, as their regular-season performance is deemed better than a No. 11 seed in the NCAA rankings. Currently, the Cougars are behind programs such as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oregon Ducks, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

College football fans online are not too keen on BYU’s placement heading into the 2025 college football playoffs.
“There is no metric or eye test by which you could use to justify BYU’s ranking. No 11-1 power team in the last 30 years has been ranked that low. This goes beyond brand bias and is outright corruption at this point and you all know it. Your silence speaks volumes,” one fan explained.
“Put any other P4 team’s name on BYU’s resume and they’d get a higher ranking. Make what you want out of that. But you know it’s true,” another fan pointed out.
“BYU is being hosed. 1 loss to the #4. Wins over Utah and at Arizona with the 6th best SOR. Yikes,” another user said.
“As a Utah fan, the BYU disrespect here is crazy,” a user shared.
Other X users started comparing the Cougars and how they’ve fared this season to programs that are ahead of them.
“How is Texas Tech so much higher than BYU when they have the same record and BYU has played a significantly harder schedule?,” one user questioned.
“As a catholic, even I can agree BYU should be in over ND. This is a JOKE,” another user asserted.
“Notre Dame over BYU is honestly laughable man. The CFP just handpicks who they want every year,” a user wrote.
The Cougars finished the 2025 collegiate football campaign with an overall record of 11-1 (8-1 Big 12) to rank as the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 conference rankings. They concluded the regular season with a three-game win streak that was capped off during Week 12 on Saturday, Nov. 29, through a 20-point triumph, 41-21, over the UCF Knights on their home pitch, the LaVell Edwards Stadium.

CFP Chairman Hunter Yurachek Provides Context On The Current Selection Process For The Postseason
In a report by college football reporter James Crepea on his X/Twitter account, he summarized the response from CFP Chairman Hunter Yurachek, which addresses how the current selection process for the 2025 postseason works.
According to Crepea’s report, Yurachek confirmed that the selection committee can still re-rank teams based on the outcomes of conference title games.
Hunter Yurachek is saying what every CFP selection committee chair other than Warde Manuel has said: committee will re-rank teams after conference title games and idle teams can move. It’s why Manuel’s remarks last year were so unusual, unprecedented, illogical and anti-data.
