The 2025 NFL Draft is nearly here, and fans will soon know which college football stars will be heading where to start their professional careers. That includes the likes of former Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Shedeur Sanders.
In the latest College Sports Network mock draft, Sanders is projected to go to the New Orleans Saints at pick No. 9 overall. What could this mean for the Buffs’ former QB?

Shedeur Sanders Tipped as Heir to High-Profile NFL Quarterback Role
If the New Orleans Saints do, in fact, select Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, he’ll likely replace QB Derek Carr later on if the veteran retires in NOLA. Carr has built a solid NFL career, throwing for 257 career touchdowns and making four Pro Bowls.
However, he is entering his mid-30s and is dealing with a recurring shoulder issue that is putting his future in danger. The Saints could be wise to draft his replacement now so that said replacement could learn from Carr before it is too late.
It is fair to say that Sanders is one of the most talented players in this draft class, regardless of position.
The Saints need a player who has the makings of a potentially solid franchise quarterback. Sanders fits that bill. The 23-year-old threw for over 4,000 yards last season in Boulder and combined to throw 134 touchdowns in his collegiate career.
He also took care of the football at Colorado (just 13 combined interceptions thrown in two years. The Saints have not been able to find a long-term answer under center since Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season.
While Carr is a prominent name, and although the team also has a developmental backup in Spencer Rattler, none of those guys seem best suited to lead New Orleans to a Super Bowl with the current roster’s state.

That is why, if a player like Cam Ward is already off the board, Sanders makes the most sense for the Saints as a future franchise signal-caller.
All eyes will be on first-year head coach Kellen Moore and Co. to see what they will do on Thursday night when they are on the clock.
