During a practice, the Colorado Buffaloes endured a harsh wake-up call when assistant coach Brett Maxie gave an unfiltered dose of reality to players who failed to execute basic fundamentals. With the passionate speech documented during the team prep, the coaching staff is serious about the need for technical execution as the season approaches.
“You’re not gonna fu*king win out here with the improper technique. It’s not going to happen,” Maxie declared with conviction. (11:10)
Maxie was very clear and with his standard fire, he explained to the players who had been lacking on their coached assignments:
“If we don’t, I ask especially, if we slide you in there to run that corner route, man, do what everybody else is doing.” (10:56)
“Don’t get, get away from doing what you do. Do what you coached to do. Attempt to do what you coached to do,” Maxie emphasized.
The assistant coach did not hold back, considering the team’s group sloppiness of not executing correct technique in high-pressure situations. He was blunt in hitting the nail on the head with the understanding of Colorado’s preparation, and he left no doubt about what was expected.

Brett Maxie Demands Mental Elevation From Colorado Players
The coaching staff became even more agitated when Brett Maxie mentioned specific players by name, pointing out opportunities that should have been routine completions. Maxie’s mention of a dropped ball suggested the coaching staff was tracking performance metrics on individual players in practice.
“That one you dropped, you need to anticipate that’s me. He coming to you. You knew that, right? Okay, then elevate it,” Maxie told one receiver during the heated exchange. (11:28)
Maxie’s focus on mindset was a key part of Colorado’s development under the current coaching staff. They have consistently challenged their players to anticipate, rather than execution, so they can respond quickly to the game at hand.
This aligns with head coach Deion Sanders’ premise of wanting perfection in all aspects. The speech also outlined a systemic issue to teams at all levels, that being when the pressure is on, players revert back to their old habits.
Sanders, who is fresh off a successful battle with bladder cancer after surgery in April, has even continued to hold his high standards while undergoing trials himself. He has expressed his excitement to bring glory to Colorado, despite the absence of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
