Next weekend, the ESPN College GameDay team will head to Norman, Oklahoma, where they are planning to set up shop to cover what will be one of the most interesting early-season confrontations in college football. Kirk Herbstreit confirmed on Friday that they are going to Sooner territory for Week 2 between No. 14 Michigan and No. 18 Oklahoma.
This site selection is about more than just another stop on the GameDay tour. The Sep. 6th show is GameDay’s first show in a new era without Lee Corso, who will end his iconic run this Saturday in Columbus for the Texas-Ohio State game.

Norman is an ideal location for this transition. Oklahoma has hosted 41 GameDay broadcasts all-time, ranking among the top schools. Michigan is not far behind with 40, tied with Georgia and Notre Dame for the fourth most all-time.
Both programs have done well in this era, with Oklahoma coming in at the 27-14 mark in GameDay games and Michigan at 21-19. The wins and losses indicate the level of opponents each typically faces when chosen as the focal game of the week.

Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Returns To Oklahoma Roots for College GameDay
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore will return to his alma mater, where he was a member of the Oklahoma offensive line in 2007 and 2008. A homecoming has added to the intensity of an already significant game.
But Moore’s return has even more drama, as he will serve a self-imposed two-game suspension following this Oklahoma visit as a result of the fallout of Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal that acquired so much attention while the Wolverines were on their way to contending for two national championships.
The Wolverines will also take the field with some new faces and expectations for the 2024 season, as true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the consensus number one recruit, was named the team’s starting QB and will be taking the field for the first time as a collegiate football player. Michigan returns to play Saturday evening as they kick off their season against New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. EST and heads back to Norman to take on the Sooners.
The Sooners also enter the 2024 season with a new quarterback in John Mateer. The transfer from Washington State had a breakout season in 2024, which made him one of the most sought-after players in the portal. Oklahoma begins its 2024 campaign against Illinois State on Saturday at 6 p.m. EST.
This is an important fourth season for Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables. The former Clemson defensive coordinator has tried to create that identity in SEC programs. Last year’s GameDay experience in Norman was not ideal, losing to Tennessee, 25-15, in their initial SEC GameDay.
The cast of GameDay with Nick Saban, Pat McAfee, Kirk Herbstreit, and many more have plenty of storylines to explore next weekend.
