Week 5 of the 2025 college football season has arrived, and it is absolutely loaded with prime matchups and potential chaos. Some of the nation’s top programs are walking into hostile environments, while others are facing opponents capable of exploiting their weaknesses. It’s still early in the season, but this weekend could be the week of upsets that could change the playoff picture in September.

Teams on Upset Alert in Week 5
1. Georgia Bulldogs at Alabama
Georgia has spent the last few seasons as the standard, but a trip to Tuscaloosa always comes with risk. Alabama is desperate to make a statement after a sluggish start, and the Tide defense has the speed to disrupt Georgia’s rhythm. If Ty Simpson can exploit the Georgia defense anything like Joey Auguliar did against Tennessee, the Bulldogs could potentially walk out of Tuscaloosa with a loss.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes at Washington
The Buckeyes may be one of the most balanced teams in the country, but Washington has quietly been red hot and won’t be intimidated by a visiting Big Ten powerhouse. Playing in Seattle is never easy, and the Huskies have the passing attack to test Ohio State’s secondary. If Washington grabs an early lead, the noise alone could tilt momentum.
3. LSU Tigers vs. Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin’s squad has the kind of fast-strike offense that can flip a game in one quarter. While there is uncertainty at quarterback for the Rebels, it clearly doesn’t matter for Kiffin and company. Backup Trindad Chambliss started last week and absolutely dominated in the 45-10 victory. LSU’s secondary has shown cracks against vertical passing, and if the Rebels get an early deep ball to connect, the energy at home could propel them to a victory.
4. Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Oregon
Penn State’s physical defense has carried the load so far, but Oregon presents a completely different challenge. The Ducks move at a tempo that forces defenses to think and react in seconds, and Penn State’s front seven will be tested in space rather than at the line of scrimmage. If Dante Moore finds rhythm early, it could turn Beaver Stadium into a nervy atmosphere for the home crowd.
5. Texas Longhorns vs. Florida
The Longhorns have plenty of offensive talent, but there is still plenty of uncertainty about their execution. Florida arrives with nothing to lose and a defense quick enough to muddy the pocket and take away easy throws. Billy Napier and his squad will be desperate for a bounce-back win after a disastrous start to the season. That kind of pressure in Gainesville could be the perfect storm for the Gators to pull off the upset.
Bottom Line
Upsets rarely follow a script, but Week 5 has plenty of opportunities. From Tuscaloosa to Gainesville, the playoff race could have a very different picture after everything is said and done on Sunday.
