As Week 2 of college football approaches, there’s a chance to see some significant upsets. Yes, many power conference teams are playing FCS or lower-tier FBS teams. Here are five candidates to take a surprising Week 2 loss.

5 Candidates to Take Tough Week 2 Upset Losses

Oklahoma
Michigan travels to the Sooners and is currently a 5.5-point underdog. This game is about two quarterbacks. John Mateer had a big game in Week 1, but he did that against an FCS team. Can he succeed against a tenacious Michigan defense? On the other hand, true frosh Bryce Underwood has that superstar feel that suggests he’s ready for a top 20 showdown on the road in his second career game. If Underwood is up for it, watch out for Michigan.
Florida
This one is a long shot, but South Florida, a 17.5-point underdog, is probably disrespected here. The Bulls took down Boise State in Week 1 and thus have already knocked one team out of the Top 25. Meanwhile, Florida was great in Week 1 against Long Island. It’s fair to wonder if those skill-position athletes are as untouchable as they looked against weaker competition. South Florida would love to pull the upset.
Ole Miss
Go back a year, and you’ve got the blueprint for this one. Ole Miss was then No. 6 in the nation and was playing at home. Kentucky used defense and some timely offense to pull the 20-17 upset. This year, Ole Miss is No. 20 and has to play at Kentucky. The last four games in this series have been decided by a field goal or less. Look for that trend to hold, and if it does, Kentucky could pull off a shocker here.
Missouri
Kansas is a dangerous opponent for the Tigers. Jalon Daniels and company are 2-0, and the dual-threat possibilities of the tough QB could put Mizzou in a difficult position. The Tigers looked great in Week 1, but that was against an FCS opponent. Beau Pribula was great against a team of lightweights, but a solid Big 12 team could be a different story. Last year, Kansas finished strong. If they start strong this year, they can pull off an upset.
Toledo
The Rockets lost to Kentucky 24-16, but the game wasn’t actually as close as the score would indicate. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky has been an imposing offense in a 2-0 start. Yes, the game is in Toledo, but Matthew McIvor’s 706 yards and eight touchdowns suggest that WKU won’t be intimidated on the road. Toledo’s offense won’t outscore WKU, and it’s far from sure that they can stop the Hilltoppers’ impressive pass defense.
