Lincoln is the epicenter of college football rumors, with the Nebraska Cornhuskers dictated the quarterback market both in the transfer portal and the 2024 recruiting cycle. After reports that they’re back in the game for the number one high school prospect in the nation, Matt Rhule’s team appears to have lost out on Kyle McCord, with Syracuse a potential destination.
College Football Rumors: Could Syracuse Land Former Nebraska Target Kyle McCord?
Update: Brent Axe of Syracuse.com reports that McCord will commit to Syracuse out of the transfer portal. According to sources close to the outlet believe that an announcement could come as early as today, Sunday, Dec. 17.
Former Ohio State starter McCord was in Lincoln this week for a visit with Nebraska, just as college football rumors that five-star quarterback prospect Dylan Raiola was back on the market for the Cornhuskers began to circulate.
Whether that was a factor, or the visit didn’t go according to plan, it has been reported that McCord is “moving on” from the program, his recruitment open.

On3.com’s Pete Nakos was the first to report the news, explaining that McCord was “keeping portal recruitment open” following his visit to Lincoln. Sources close to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer confirmed that the former Ohio State quarterback won’t be committing to the Cornhuskers a short while later.
As starting quarterback spots for the 2024 college football season begin to fill up, there aren’t too many options left on the table for McCord.
Furthermore, several college football rumors suggest that multiple remaining portal quarterbacks have visits scheduled at high-profile programs for the coming weekend.
According to odds from BetOnline less than one week ago, Nebraska (+250) was the favorite to land McCord, with Texas A&M (+300), Oregon (+400), Florida State (+400), and Miami (+500) following closely behind. Since then, the Ducks have secured Dillon Gabriel, while the highly talented Cam Ward is in Florida this weekend with his pick of the ‘Noles and the ‘Canes.
When the music stops in this game of transfer portal musical chairs, will there be anywhere left for McCord to sit? The BetOnline odds also listed Oklahoma, Rutgers, Baylor, Mississippi State, and NC State, with the latter landing former Coastal Carolina standout Grayson McCall. Could there be another team in the running for the former Ohio State quarterback?
In the wake of the news that McCord is moving on from Nebraska, 247Sports’ Tom Loy added fuel to the fire of the college football rumors surrounding the first-year starter, stating, “I’m told to keep a very close eye on Syracuse and Kyle McCord” on social media platform “X, formerly known as Twitter.”
It isn’t the first time the Orange have been linked with the former five-star quarterback. There is history there, with McCord being courted by Syracuse coming out of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in the 2021 class.
Furthermore, the new coaching staff led by Fran Brown has reportedly been in contact with the quarterback since stating his intention to transfer.
Under Brown, Syracuse is already starting to make waves both in the transfer portal and recruiting circles. Yet, they’re a team in need at the quarterback position.
Former Buffalo Bulls QB Cole Snyder was with the program earlier this week, so they’re clearly looking to add from the portal. Having turned his back on Nebraska, McCord gives them a legitimate option at the position.
