Top 5 College Football Coaches On Hot Seat After Week 2 Battles Ft. Billy Napier

Even after just two weeks of college football, the hot seat for some college coaches is absolutely ablaze. As the stakes of college football continue to reach higher, so do the expectations surrounding top programs. Here are five coaches who have underachieved in 2025 and are most definitely on the hot seat.

5 College Coaches on the Hot Seat

    5. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama

DeBoer picked up an easy one-sided win in Week 2. It doesn’t change the brutal 31-17 loss to Florida State in Week 1. DeBoer is 10-5 at Alabama. He has lost twice as many games as a two-score favorite as Nick Saban did between 2007 and 2023 in total. Picking up blowout wins over weaker opponents won’t save DeBoer’s job. If he doesn’t get Alabama to the playoff, his days could well be numbered in Tuscaloosa.

    4. Scott Satterfield, Cincinnati

Satterfield made his name at Appalachian State. He was probably lucky to draw the Cincinnati job after going 25-24 at Louisville. He’s now 9-17 at Cincinnati, a school that posted three 11+ win seasons in a run between 2018 and 2021. Satterfield hasn’t reached expectations with the Bearcats. If Satterfield delivers a third straight losing season, it’s not hard to imagine Cincinnati deciding to make a move pretty much immediately.

    3. Brent Pry, Virginia Tech

An assistant under James Franklin, Pry got the Virginia Tech job from Penn State. That said, he’s 16-23 now, including a 0-2 start to 2025. A decade ago, Justin Fuente had Tech as a top-25 level team. It’s not that long since Tech was nationally relevant under Frank Beamer. But Tech hasn’t been a factor in the ACC, and Pry doesn’t seem well-equipped to lead Tech on a bounce-back run. His days in Blacksburg are likely numbered.

    2. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State

Unlike most of the names on this list, Gundy has been incredibly successful. His career record at OSU is 170-89. Gundy led the Cowboys to eight 10+ win seasons and a pair of top-10 finishes. But Gundy is now 4-10 over the past 14 games. His Cowboys took a painful 69-3 loss to Oregon last week, and it’s hard to see the team bouncing back successfully from such a brutal start. Gundy’s OSU days are likely already finished.

    1. Billy Napier, Florida

Napier is 20-20 in his Florida career. His predecessor, Dan Mullen, led the Gators to a 10-3 season and an 11-2 season. Napier’s best mark remains last year’s 8-5 record. That seems absolutely impossible to beat, given UF’s schedule and their embarrassing 18-16 loss to South Florida. Napier had seemingly already lost control of the UF program, but picked up wins in the last four games of Florida’s 2024 season.

This week against LSU could itself be the end of the line for Napier. The underdog has won four of the last five games in that series, and another ugly loss would leave Florida outside the realm of probably even reaching a bowl game. Napier has failed to win games with Anthony Richardson and DJ Lagway playing quarterback. Letting him keep his job feels like actual administrative malpractice at this point.
