    NCAA Baseball Dead Periods and Contact Rules: What Every Recruit Needs To Know

    The NCAA defines specific periods to regulate recruiting activities:

    • Contact Period: Coaches can have in-person interactions with athletes and their families, both on and off campus.
    • Dead Period: No in-person contact is allowed; communication is limited to phone or written correspondence.
    • Quiet Period: In-person contact is only permitted on the college campus; off-campus visits or evaluations are prohibited.
    • Evaluation Period: Coaches can assess athletes’ skills during competitions but cannot have in-person contact.
    • Recruiting Shutdown: A recruiting shutdown is a time when no form of recruiting is permissible.

    Key Rule Changes Effective April 2023

    To tackle early recruitment concerns, the NCAA made considerable reforms:

    • Communication Restrictions: Coaches and players cannot initiate contact before August 1 of the athlete’s junior year.
    • Third-Party Involvement: Indirect communications through third parties are prohibited before August 1 of the junior year.
    • Campus Visits: Unofficial and official visits, as well as off-campus contacts, are not allowed before Sept. 1 of the junior year.
