A week ago, LSU first baseman Jared Jones culminated a six-run rally with a walk-off three-run homer as the Tigers defeated defending national champion Tennessee, 6-3. How will the 6’4″, 246-pound junior standout open this weekend’s SEC series at Texas A&M?

Powerful First Baseman Looking for Encore Performance
Only in college baseball can the nation’s No. 2-ranked team sit third in its conference. But that is where the 37-9 LSU Tigers sit. With a 14-7 record in SEC play, coach Jay Johnson’s team trails top-ranked Texas and No. 11 Arkansas going into its weekend three-game set in College Station against Texas A&M.
Although Johnson hopes it doesn’t take until the ninth inning this time, he sure wouldn’t mind some more late-game heroics from the standout first baseman Jones. The massive Marietta, Georgia native leads the team with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs. At home, he hit a three-run homer Tuesday night in a 15-2 rout of Southeastern Louisiana.
But it was his 14th home run that Johnson would not mind seeing a repeat of. The Tigers took 2-of-3 from defending national champion Tennessee at home last weekend, starting with a cardiac comeback 6-3 victory over the Volunteers Friday night.
In that game, LSU trailed, 3-0, going into the bottom of the ninth. The team rallied to tie the game at three before Jones walked it off with a three-run blast. On Sunday, he also went 2-for-4 in LSU’s 12-2 victory over the Volunteers. His home run Tuesday evening against Southeastern Louisiana was the 57th of his career, placing him in fifth place all-time in LSU’s prestigious baseball history.
“It was a great night, we stuck with it and had some great at-bats to set the table in the ninth,” Johnson told LSU’s baseball website after the game. “And what a swing by Jared at the end. He’s been working hard these past few weeks, and it paid off tonight.”

The Tigers must show that they are not just a home team, as LSU is currently just 5-5 away from Alex Box Stadium. They’ll be going up against a motivated Texas A&M side ticked off at falling one-run short three times last weekend against arch-rival Texas. The Aggies are clinging to a postseason berth at 25-19 overall and 8-13 in the SEC.
Some more heroics from Jones could put the nail in the coffin and make Johnson happy again.
