LSU Baseball Schedule Breakdown: Why May Could Make or Break the Tigers’ CWS Hopes

Looking at how May is shaping up for LSU, there’s no doubt that head coach Jay Johnson has a real headache. Like every year, the Tigers have big goals for the season and will be looking to finish on a high note.

However, they won’t be able to do it without going all out.

    LSU Baseball May Schedule Breakdown

LSU has three three-game series remaining within the SEC that will close out the regular season for them. Even though two of the three series are against opponents that have not been good this year, the Tigers will not be able to relax given their position in the standings.

Their spot in the SEC Championship isn’t in serious jeopardy, as they currently sit in third place with 14 wins and seven losses (12th place). But six teams trail them by two games or less, so the slightest slip could push them further away from the top spots.

Falling in the standings means facing tougher opponents in the postseason and, generally, a less favorable position heading into the NCAA Championship. The Tigers don’t want to hear any of that.

But to do so, they must take advantage of opportunities and overcome challenges. The first will come when they face Texas A&M and South Carolina, and the second when they play the Arkansas Razorbacks.

LSU will visit Texas A&M on May 3-4 at Olsen Field in Blue Bell Park and South Carolina on May 15-17 at Founders Park. The Aggies are 13th in the conference with eight wins and 13 losses, while the Gamecocks are 15th with five wins and 17 losses.

At first glance, it looks like six excellent games for the Tigers to make their case and win at least four of them. LSU has a less-than-flattering 5-5 overall record on the road, so that’s a stat to put behind them.

Between the two aforementioned series, LSU will face Arkansas, which is currently in second place in the SEC standings. LSU is five games behind the first-place Texas Longhorns, with only seven conference games left in the season.

One of those games is against Arkansas, which has already won the first two games in the series, while the Longhorns’ final six games are against teams that haven’t excelled this season, the Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners.

LSU’s chances of overtaking Arkansas and Texas to win the regular season title don’t look too realistic. But they have a good shot at finishing second, which would pave the way for them to play in the NCAA Championship and, hopefully, the College World Series for the first time since 2023, when they won.
