Is Cam Cannarella the Best Defensive Center Fielder in a Decade? Three Coaches Say Yes

Cam Cannarella’s reputation as a defensive center fielder has skyrocketed, with three opposing coaches recently declaring him the best they’ve seen in at least a decade. His incredible highlight plays, including a full-speed, over-the-shoulder catch in last year’s Super Regional, have drawn comparisons to Willie Mays’ legendary 1954 World Series catch, leaving even veteran coaches stunned.

This season, Cannarella’s defensive prowess has helped propel the No. 3-ranked Clemson Tigers, one of the nation’s top baseball teams, into serious contention for Omaha this summer.

Cam Cannarella’s Stellar Defense Has Coaches Calling Him the Best in a Decade

According to Jacob Rudner of Baseball America, three opposing coaches who faced Clemson in the past two years hailed Cannarella as the best defender they’ve seen in at least a decade, with one even calling him “the best ever.”

This glowing praise comes despite a statistical drop-off in Cannarella’s junior season. Batting .300 with a .451 OBP, two home runs, and 29 RBIs through April, his numbers differ from his freshman .388 average and seven homers, or his sophomore .337 average and 11 homers.

Cannarella’s performance at the plate doesn’t tell the full story. After undergoing labrum surgery in the offseason, he faced significant restrictions, including not being allowed to steal bases or participate in pregame work.

“One bad slide,” Cannarella explained in February, “and it could’ve taken me out for the year. So I kind of had to change my game a little bit.”

His contact rate has dipped slightly from 82% to 78%, and his exit velocities have decreased by about one mph. Even with these challenges, Cannarella’s defense remains elite.

Cannarella himself remains confident in his defensive abilities, saying,

“Defense is where I feel the most confident. No matter what’s happening with my bat, I know I can help us win games with my glove.”

Clemson head coach Erik Bakich noted Cannarella’s impact both offensively and defensively, saying,

“Cam can change the game with one play defensively in the outfield and change the game with his bat.”

While his draft status remains uncertain, Cannarella’s contributions have firmly secured his place in Clemson baseball history.
