Colin Cowherd Bluntly Dismisses Steve Sarkisian’s Texas’ ‘Alabama’ Status in 2025, Calls It “Nonsense”

This week, sports media personality Colin Cowherd offered a scathing critique of the Texas hype around the rise under Steve Sarkisian. Also, even though Texas is ranked No. 1 in both AP and coaches’ preseason polls, Cowherd did not agree that the Longhorns are an Alabama-like dynasty.

A recent post by TheHerd highlighted Cowherd’s comments, and the post stated that Cowherd has called the comparison between Texas and Alabama “nonsense”:

“Texas, my entire life, has been USC in cowboy hats. Good looking, a lot of style, a lot of vibe and energy. The coach always makes a lot of money. Cool stadium, cool city. Eh, where are all the [national championships]? … I love Texas football… They pass the eye test; they have most of my life, but they’re not Alabama. They’re not gritty. Like, Texas is the prom king… Alabama was like the best wrestler in your high school…. Nobody is afraid of the Prom King. And that’s the problem. Alabama intimidated you, Georgia intimidated you,” he claimed.

Can Texas Prove Cowherd Wrong in 2025?

Texas begins the 2025 season with seemingly more national anticipation than ever before- the program has been ranked No. 1 in the AP and the coaches polls, a first in program history. But they still have yet to claim a trophy besides preseason labels on their resume.

Steve Sarkisian’s team has appeared in the College Football playoffs for two consecutive years, with both the latest appearances at the semifinals. The losses last year were, in large measure, blamed on being physically overmatched along the line of scrimmage, particularly against Georgia.

Their initial test will be on Aug. 30 at Ohio State, a College Football Playoff Rematch of last year in a harsher climate. While Columbus in late August shouldn’t be too bad, it definitely doesn’t beat the air-conditioned AT&T Stadium.

Texas’ football schedule is also a lot more challenging than the 2024 counterpart, according to USA Today. It features matchups against Florida, Georgia, and rivalry games against Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

With a difficult schedule and a new quarterback in Arch Manning, it seems Texas will either prove Cowherd wrong or potentially fold under the pressure. For now, patience will be key as August 30th will be the deadline for the first revelation of answers about the Longhorns in 2025.
