Cole Sullivan Transfer Portal: 5 Potential Landing Spots for Michigan LB Amid Kyle Whittingham Move

Kyle Whittingham is in, and Cole Sullivan is out. At least, that is what it appears as the linebacker entered the transfer portal. The new era wasn’t what he signed up for, so Sullivan is looking to head elsewhere.

According to a Friday report by Pete Thamel on X, Sullivan projects as one of the top linebackers in the portal. Thamel didn’t rule out a potential return, but it’s clear that Sullivan is examining everything.

“Michigan LB Cole Sullivan is entering the portal, per an ESPN source,” Thamel posted. “He projects as one of the top linebackers in the portal, as he’ll have two years remaining. A return to Michigan remains possible, but he’s expected to evaluate his options.”

If Sullivan exits, there will be no shortage of landing spots that make sense. Here’s a look at what could happen in the transfer portal.

5 Sensible Landing Spots For Michigan LB Cole Sullivan

    #5 – Washington State University

If Cole Sullivan wants to take a shot at potentially becoming the biggest star on a squad in a conference that could have a disproportionate amount of attention on it in 2026, he could go with the Washington State Cougars.

The Pac-12’s transition back to a normal conference is expected next season, and with it will be plenty of added attention. Sullivan could benefit if he takes the leap and if he likes Michigan’s weather, Washington State won’t be much different.

    #4 – USC Trojans

The USC Trojans are in dire need of a boost to its rushing defense, and adding Cole Sullivan could help the unit take a step forward. Sullivan’s 44 combined tackles and five tackles for loss could take a step forward in his third season in the FBS. The Trojans, a team that allows 143.2 yards per game on the ground, could see that number improve with Sullivan.

    #3 – Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M’s defense stepped up in the playoff, but it was not enough. It showed up in January, but it was less than perfect in the months leading up to it, with 130.8 yards allowed on the ground per game. Sullivan could slot in to help the unit.

    #2 – Tulane Green Wave

As a team that made the College Football Playoff, the Tulane Green Wave will be a team with plenty of eyes on it in 2026, including plenty of NFL scouts. If Cole Sullivan wants to make a run at the professional leagues, he is going to need a team with plenty of visibility in the linebacking room. If he can get on the field regularly and show out, it could be a big boost to his eventual draft stock.

    #1 – Ole Miss Rebels

The Ole Miss Rebels are one of the biggest stories in college football and have room for improvement with their passing defense and rushing defense. Cole Sullivan has an answer for both needs with three interceptions, five tackles for loss, and two sacks. He can do it all, and if Ole Miss will have him, he can do it all for the team.
