Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, appeared in a press conference on Monday with the Colorado medical team. There, he revealed that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer earlier this offseason and underwent bladder removal surgery because of a cancerous tumor. The surgery was successful and he does not need to undergo chemotherapy treatment.
Since the report came out, many people in the football world have reached out to Sanders or voiced their support on social media. On Thursday, Sanders’ former teammate on the Dallas Cowboys, Nate Newton, spoke to CBS Sports about what kept Sanders going during the darkest days of his fight with cancer.
“I went and visited him every week after that,” Nate Newton said. “Just talking to him, just telling him to do what’s right since you not gonna stay in the hospital, please do what’s right, and he did. I’m glad he’s alright. I’m happy for him. I pray for him. Just keep going and appreciate what the doctors did. I think those kids kept him going was, ‘I got to get back to my kids.’ That was his goal, when his kids saw him, he said, “I want them to see a dog.”

Coach Prime’s Return to Colorado Breathes Life Into the Team
Now that Deion Sanders has undergone treatment for bladder cancer, he is shifting his focus back to the Colorado Buffaloes and the 2025 college football season. He was absent for long stretches this offseason because of his health, but now that he is back, he is breathing life into the team. On Wednesday after practice, safety Carter Stoutmire spoke about his return.
“Whatever hardship trials he goes through, he always makes it through,” Stoutmire said. “Seeing him back, just a breath of fresh air for the whole team.”
Cornerback DJ McKinney also opened up about having Coach Prime back with the team.
“Honestly, just having Coach Prime’s presence back in the building is an amazing feeling,” McKinney said. “I feel like everybody just has a chip on their shoulder.”
With Coach Prime healthy and back with the Buffaloes, they could have a chip on their shoulder this season. They will be looking to overcome the loss of their two biggest stars from last season, Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. The team will start its season on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech.
